Guild Library

About the Library

The Guild has an extensive library of books, videos, pamphlets, samples and other printed and woven material relating to weaving and other fiber arts. It is now housed at the Strawbale Barn Studio, 9156 Santa Margarita Road, Atascadero, CA (map).

Guild members may borrow these materials on the following basis:

  • Only Members of the Guild will be allowed to check out books and other library materials.
  • Materials are due in three months. They may be renewed for an additional three months unless there has been a request for the book by another member.
  • If material is not returned on time, a postcard reminder, phone call or email will be sent.
  • If material is lost or badly damaged, the member is responsible for paying replacement costs.
  • New members (i.e. 1st year members) may check out only one item at a time for a period of one month
  • Rare and/or valuable materials will be designated for use only in the library. If the physical condition of the item permits, photocopies may be made. At the discretion of the librarian, exceptions infrequently may be made to members in good standing.

Library Policies

  • The library acquires materials in book, DVD, periodical, and pamphlet form, within the limits of the library budget. Other formats, such as patterns, exhibit catalogs, other electronic formats, etc. may be acquired as appropriate.
  • Selection choices are driven by the focus of the Guild. Materials on spinning, weaving, and dyeing are of prime interest, with more selective representation of materials on color theory, felting, knitting, etc.
  • Members are always welcome to recommend materials for purchase.
  • Periodical subscriptions are selected and maintained, taking into consideration the recurring annual costs and continuing storage issues.
  • The library welcomes gift materials from members and the public. All gift materials are accepted on the basis that any materials not needed by the library will be disposed of at the will of the library. This may mean raffled off to members, sold to members, sold on the out-of-print marketplace, donated to other guilds, or discarded. Proceeds of such sales will be used for library purchases.
  • Donors of significant size gifts will receive a thank-you letter and a non-profit tax ID statement. Donors of materials added to the collection will be identified on the item and in the card catalog.

  • Most library materials are housed in the library, presently in the Straw Bale Barn Weaving Studio, Atascadero (map).
  • If space issues require, lower use materials will be housed as archival materials. Members may request access to such materials with an appropriate lead time.

Criteria for removal from the collection include:

  • Duplicate titles unless heavily used.
  • Material which is damaged and unrepairable.
  • Material of esoteric subject which has a record of little or no use in the last ten years.
  • Materials removed from the collection will be marked “Withdrawn”, cards will be removed from the card catalog, and titles removed from the Web.
  • Withdrawn materials may be raffled or sold to Guild members, given to other guilds, sold on the OP marketplace, or discarded.
