All Guild Saturday Meeting September 24

This month we will be creating weaving and fibers-related vision boards. This month-long exercise will help us unleash our creativity, inspire ourselves and others, and help us get to know each other through our fibers interests! Our meeting(s) will be Zoom meetings. Invitations will be sent to all guild members a few days before each meeting.

Vision boards can be created either online (I recommend Canva) or on an actual board (or a combination of both!) using photos, sketches, yarn, swatches, words and phrases, etc…

Each week Barby will send out helpful tips and ideas to guide you on this journey. We will be using these boards to answer the following questions:

  • What inspires me in my weaving?
  • What is a new skill, technique, or pattern I’ve always wanted to try or learn?
  • What am I stuck on or need help with?
  • What excites me about weaving and fibers?
  • What do I want to accomplish this year?

At our meeting at the end of the month, we will share our vision boards and each person have a turn to discuss their vision board. This will be a fun way to get to know each other, help me coordinate activities each month to support your growth, and provide you with a tangible finished product to hang in your studio or weaving space to keep you inspired all year! There are no rules so get those ideas flowing!

Remember, these vision boards are a great tool to help take our creativity and weaving to a whole new level so just enjoy the process!

If you would like to participate or would like more information, contact Barby Wunsch, barby_wunsch@live.com

Pop-Up Gatherings – Staying Connected

The Guild Motto and guiding principle is “Friendship is the Shining Path We Weave”.  For months, we have been  separated from our friends by this pandemic and, while we are not ready to assemble indoors at a regular meeting, we are ready to try a new way to stay connected.

The Guild board is initiating a new program called “Pop-Up Guild Groups”.  Any member can offer to host a Pop-Up gathering.  The host will set the date, time duration, location, maximum number of participants, the theme (if any) and any other specifications.  All gatherings will be outdoors, in a back yard, park or other open space.

An announcement will be sent out to all guild members and those interested in attending will contact the host to reserve their space. no drop-ins or guests without a reservation will be allowed.

For more information, click here.

Ruby Leslie September Workshop Cancelled!

We had hoped to be able to host Ruby Leslie’s “3Ds of 3-D: Deflection, Differential Shrinkage and Doubleweave” Workshop in September, 2020.  Unfortunately this workshop has been cancelled due to the pandemic.  Contact Patricia Martin, Patwove@aol.com if you are interested in joining us at a future date.

All Guild Meetings & Functions Currently Cancelled

In order to help prevent the rapid spread of COVID-19 in our vulnerable population and the community in general, the Guild Board has decided to cancel all meetings for the remainder of the month of March. At that point, the Board will reevaluate the situation and notify all members. This includes regular Thursday and Saturday meetings, as well as Tuesday Spinners, Study Group and all Special Interest Group (SIG) meetings.

Please stay safe and healthy – and get some weaving done!

Swedish Weaves Workshops

In conjunction with our May Saturday Meeting (May 30), Joanne Hall will present two workshops about Swedish Weaves.

On Friday, May 29 Joanne Hall will talk about “Understanding Countermarch and Draw Looms” with loom demonstrations. This is a good opportunity to learn about these types of looms. The fee for this 1-day workshop is $68.

On Saturday afternoon, Sunday and Monday (May 30-June 1), there will be a “Swedish Arts Weaves” workshop covering five different Swedish Weaves through the use of pick up and half heddle techniques. This workshop is appropriate for both 4 Shaft and Rigid Heddle Looms. The fee for this 2 1/2 day workshop is $175.

Sign ups will be available at the Thursday, February 11 Guild meeting. Space is limited, so bring workshop fees to hold your space. If you cannot attend the Guild meeting this Thursday, contact Patricia Martin (patwove@aol.com). There are no refunds, but you may find a replacement if you are unable to attend.

New Special Interest Group Forming!

If you are curious about freeform weaving in the Japanese philosophy and styles and you would like to explore this topic with other weavers, please join us for our first meeting in Diane Reynolds’ home in San Luis Obispo (805.704.8273) on February 27 from 10 am to 12 pm.

This would be a good place to expand your creativity and color sense while creating your own unique handwovens. We would informally gather monthly on the 4th Thursday of each month from 10am to 12pm. Portable Floor looms, Table Looms and Rigid Heddle Looms can all be used.

If you would like more information about the formation of this new Special Interest Group, contact Denise Schryver: denise.schryver@gmail.com or 805.440.4579

Rigid Heddle Group

This article was submitted for publication on the Schacht Spindle Company web site:

“There are happy rigid heddle weavers on the central coast of California! Our group is part of the Central Coast Weavers Guild. We number about 25, with attendance at monthly meetings averaging about a dozen. We use all manner and size of rigid heddle looms and we love them for their versatility, portability, ease of use and just plain fun. This group is responsible for bringing the popularity of the rigid heddle experience to the forefront in our Guild.

“At our gatherings, we share our weavings, try new techniques, and enjoy learning from one another. Rigid heddle weaving is not our only interest by far. We are floor loom and tapestry weavers, spinners, dyers, knitters, crocheters, and seamstresses. There is no shortage of talent, experience and ideas when we get together.

“This past year we had sessions on such topics as draft reading, pick-up techniques, double weave, color and design, and natural dyes, to name a few. Our rigid heddle weavers produce scarves, table runners, purses, bathmats, pillow covers, wall hangings and more.

“If you’re in the area and want to experience the joys of weaving, we’d love to have you join us. Visit us on Facebook @ Central Coast Weavers.”
